Sleep Deprivation During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of joy for all mothers, but awaiting the arrival of their baby amidst the excitement can suddenly lose steam if expectant mothers are exhausted due to lack of sleep. According to a survey conducted in 1998 by the National Sleep Foundation, 78% of the women reported problems with sleep. These include either problems with falling asleep or difficulty in staying asleep.
There are different reasons behind encountering difficulty during sleep, many of which are related to the nervousness caused by an upcoming change in way of life. This is very accurate for first time mums, since they are also apprehensive about the delivery of the baby and pain accompanying labor.
In order to remain healthy and less exhausted, soon to be mothers should prioritize their sleep needs, well before the baby is due since the arrival of the baby also results in several sleepless nights. Insomnia is a widespread cause in keeping pregnant women from getting adequate sleep at night, and leaves the woman feeling drained in the morning. This can be due to changes in hormones that result in nausea, fetal movements; a baby who is very active, sleep apnea or breathing problems during sleep frequent need to urinate during the night as a result of increased strain on the bladder by the fetus, heartburn, and pain in the legs and feet.
Although it is very important for an expectant mother to fulfill her sleep requirements to feel active and refreshed, using medication and drugs to achieve that target is discouraged since it can cause adverse reactions to the developing fetus. The following steps can be taken in order to improve the quality of sleep during pregnancy:
? Avoid spicy, acidic and fried foods ? Sleeping on the left side to improve circulation to the fetus ? Avoid lying on your back for prolonged periods of times ? Nap during the day ? Start some exercise, after consulting with your doctor, ? Cut fluid intake before bedtime ? Improving the conditions in your bedroom, ensuring it is dark and quiet ? Consult your doctor in case of extremely poor quality of sleep
