Sleep Apnea: And You Thought It Was Just A Nightmare Woke You Up

This is your scenario: You go to bed, hoping for a peaceful night’s slumber. However, just as you closed your eyes and felt yourself tread on the domain of dreams, you wake sweaty and breathless – as if you’ve run for miles and miles until someone in your dream caught up on you and choked you you. It does seem like a bad dream but if this happens often during a night’s slumber combined with the stoppage of breathing, then this may be an incidence of sleep apnea.

An extreme incidence of snoring can make a person’s breathing stop; this is known as sleep apnea – or what is called an apneic spell in one’s slumber. This can range from mild to moderate to severe depending on the number of times the spell occurs. And all the nightmare effects mentioned are some of the signs of this condition.

Other indicators may include drowsiness and crankiness the following day due to lack of quality sleep. Many individuals may feel fatigued throughout the day and this can also be due to sleep apnea, which may have affected the quality of the person’s sleep. Moreover, the individual may also have a decreased sex drive, difficulty in focusing and concentrating and experience bouts of depression. People who suffer from sleep apnea are also prone to or have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and heart diseases, making them very prone to strokes.

So how do we treat this? There are a number of methods of curing sleep apnea. Reducing weight and reducing one’s alcohol intake are two conservative procedures that are recommended by physicians as remedies for sleep apnea. Another is treating any allergy or sinusitis first as this can obstruct the air passage when breathing through the nose during sleep and, hence, may trigger the start of snoring. There are also surgeries that can help greatly if the sleep apnea is severe.

Surgical procedures to treat sleep apnea can be done through the nose, through the palate, through the tongue, or through the trachea. A discussion with an ENT specialist is highly advised in order to determine which sleep apnea treatment procedure will be suitable for the individual. Thus, even with sleep apnea, there is still hope for the sufferer. There are still ways to get to that happy, sweet dreamland we all wish for.
