This method is called guided imagery, wherein you come up with any shape or form to become a focal point of your mind. This method also employs hypnosis. Another way to keep your focus is by setting it on an object. It could be practically anything, a candle, a ball, anything.
Good Environment Setting
A very effective way to meditate is to underscore the environment where you are to meditate. A good setting will do a lot in giving you a peace of mind. Defining a good setting would be a place insulated from any external distraction, particularly noise or people could catch your attention. But this depends really one what could possibly catch your attention. The idea is to get rid of this distraction from the room and create an environment conducive for meditating.
