Apnea: Learn More About It.
Apnea is a term describing sudden relapses in breathing during sleep. It makes sleeping tiresome and uncomfortable and with that lack of sleep bad moods will start to appear and your relationship will suffer.
Since breathing is not constant, the supply of oxygen to the brain and the body in general is interrupted. These patients snore a lot which could affect their relationship with those sleeping with them.
Apneas are divided into two: central and obstructive. The central type is due to the brain breathing control area not being able to respond properly to respiratory signals.
As the name suggests the obstructive type is due to the airway being closed up by tissues originating from the throat area.
The factor predisposing people to apneas include male gender. Males have a thick muscular neck that could obstruct the airway.
Age: persons above the age of 40 are at a higher risk. Seeing that a high body mass index is associated with a huge neck, such people are predisposed. Family history is another risk factor.
Late detection and treatment of this disease can increase the risk of death due to complications of high blood pressure, strokes, brain dysfunction as well as diabetes.
Some severe cases are treat by performing surgeries or providing medication in form of nasal decongestants. Bipap and Cpap devices are preferred in some cases; they cover the face of the patient at night to help them breath properly.
It has been observed that 70% of persons with apnea are overweight; hence to avoid this disease, a person above age forty has to loose weight.
Advanced cases can be treated through surgery to remove any tissue blocking the airway. Some form of masks worn at night to enhance smooth breathing can be used; Bipap and Cpap are the most common.Obesity is the most common culprit in this disease with 7 out of every 10 people presenting with the condition being overweight. Consequently, regular exercising is crucial in its prevention. People who snore often could be having apnea thus should seek medical attention.
