A Good Sleep Cycle
It is essential for one to understand the various stages of sleep in order to sleep better. Our sleeping pattern works in harmony with our internal body clock that is affected by light, time of the day and other signals for sleeping and waking up.
At night your go through various stages of sleep, moving back and forth from deep sleep to more alert stages.
Sleeping Cycle can be divided into two broad categories i.e. REM sleep and Non REM sleep. In the REM sleep, one experiences fast movement of eyeballs to and fro, hence giving it its name. This sleep is characterized by irregular and fast breathing that is not too deep. The body may also find it hard to keep its temperature in check during this period as the heart rate might increase causing high blood pressure. The limbs may also become temporarily paralyzed during REM sleep. However the most significant feature of this period is active dreaming. A person awoken from REM sleep can effectively recall what he was dreaming about.
The non REM sleep comprises of different stages of alertness and attentiveness. Initially in stage 1 brain activity starts decelerating as muscles also relax and eye movement slows down. In the following stages the brain activity slows down progressively. The brain waves shot during stage 3 are called delta waves are inter mixed with other faster waves during that period. However stage 4 it?s the delta waves that dominate.
Stages 3 and 4 are called Deep Sleep and it is during this time that it is almost impossible to awaken a person. This period is characterized by an absence of eye movement and muscle activity both.
